[Fallout 5] Persistent Booby-Trapped Enemy Camps
P0Clearing an enemy camp should not permanently turn it into a dead, meaningless location. The player should be able to anticipate that escaped enemies, reinforcements, scavengers, raiders, creatures, or entirely different factions may eventually occupy it and prepare accordingly.
Camp Reoccupation System
After you clear a raider camp, military checkpoint, gang hideout, abandoned warehouse, Super Mutant den, or similar location, the game quietly places that location into a Reoccupation Pool.
Over time, several things could happen:
Surviving enemies return.
Enemies who escaped during the original battle come back with reinforcements.
A rival faction discovers the abandoned camp.
Scavengers begin stripping it.
Settlers attempt to occupy it.
Creatures use it as shelter.
Traveling merchants temporarily stop there.
Bounty hunters investigate what happened.
The original faction tries to reclaim strategically important territory.
Nobody returns for weeks or months.
The area slowly deteriorates and becomes overgrown.
A much stronger enemy group recognizes its defensive value and moves in.
This creates an important question:
Do you simply clear the camp, or prepare it for whoever comes next?
Booby-Trap the Camp
After clearing an area, the player could activate a Prepare Location mode.
Instead of conventional settlement building, this is a lighter tactical construction system specifically designed for abandoned locations.
You could booby-trap:
Entrances
Tripwires
Grenade traps
Mines
Alarm wires
Noise traps
Falling debris
Electrified doors
Pressure plates
Rigged locks
Doorway shotgun traps
Chemical sprays
Smoke traps
Buildings
Rigged stairways

This would connect perfectly with a persistent enemy-memory system.
Suppose you attack a raider camp containing 18 enemies.
You kill 14.
Three flee.
One hides and survives.
The game remembers those four survivors.
Days later, one might return and say:
"This is the place. Somebody tore through everybody."
But because that enemy was present during your first attack, they may remember certain things.
If you repeatedly use mines, perhaps they tell the others:
"Watch the ground. Whoever hit us likes explosives."
Now the returning group approaches more cautiously.
They might:
Send someone ahead.
Use a dog to search.
Shoot suspected mines.
Approach through another entrance.
Send a robot inside first.
Watch rooftops.
Disable obvious traps.
Camp outside before entering.
Observe the location for several hours.
That means the world is learning from the player.
Trap Intelligence Levels
Not every enemy should detect traps equally.
Reckless enemies
Raiders high on chems might charge straight inside.
Detection: Very Low
Ordinary scavengers
They might notice obvious traps but miss sophisticated ones.
Detection: Low to Medium
Veteran mercenaries
They examine doorways, wires, containers, and unusual debris.
Detection: High
Brotherhood patrol
They may use technical equipment and trained personnel.

Super Mutants
Some simply walk through traps.
Others may recognize traps after repeatedly encountering them.
Robots
Depends heavily on sensor package.
A Protectron might walk directly into one.

Deathclaws and animals
They aren't looking for "traps" in the human sense, but smell, hearing, movement, and instinct could cause them to avoid some devices.
This turns trap placement into something more sophisticated than:

The Most Important Addition: Chain-Reaction Traps
Players should be able to build multi-stage traps.
Example:
A raider enters through a door.
Tripwire triggers.
The door slams shut behind him.
An alarm attracts the rest of his group.
Several enemies enter.
A pressure plate activates a fuel leak.
A second trigger ignites it.
The survivors run through another doorway.
That doorway is mined.
You effectively constructed a wasteland ambush without being there.

Maybe your traps killed them.
Maybe the enemies destroyed your transmitter.

You Should Not Automatically Know What Happened
This part is important.
Fallout shouldn't magically tell you everything.
If you don't have surveillance equipment, all you know is:
One of your traps was triggered.
When you eventually return, you reconstruct what happened from the environment.
You might discover:
Bodies
Blood trails
Destroyed traps
Bullet holes
Drag marks
Empty containers
A damaged turret
A broken door
Missing corpses
New footprints
A recently used campfire
Environmental storytelling becomes procedurally generated from actual gameplay events.
Enemies Can Turn Your Trap Against You
This would make the mechanic considerably better.
A skilled enemy may:
Disarm your mine.
Recover it.
Reposition it.
Place it where you previously entered.
Rewire your turret.
Disable your alarm.
Set their own tripwire.
Leave your trap appearing untouched.
You return thinking:
"I trapped this place."
Then:
CLICK.
That was your mine.
An enemy moved it.
Trap Familiarity
Enemies connected to the same faction could gradually learn about the player's tactics.
If you've booby-trapped six Raider camps with explosives, rumors could spread.
"Don't touch anything after that psycho clears a place."
Eventually raiders may deliberately:
Search containers before opening them.
Avoid main entrances.
Use prisoners to test dangerous areas.
Throw objects onto suspicious pressure plates.
Shoot traps from distance.
Bring demolition specialists.
You force the AI to adapt.
And then you have to change your tactics too.
False Traps
This could become wonderfully psychological.
Players could construct things that look trapped but aren't.
A visible tripwire might cause cautious enemies to take another entrance.
Except that's exactly where your real trap is.
You could essentially manipulate enemy pathfinding through intimidation.
Likewise enemies could do this to you.
Trap Specialists
Certain companions or recruitable settlers could specialize in this system.
Trapper
Makes traps harder to detect.
Demolition Expert
Builds more powerful explosive traps.
Engineer
Connects multiple devices.
Hunter
Specializes in animal and creature traps.
Technician
Handles sensors, cameras, robots, and remote activation.
Former Raider
Knows how raiders inspect captured camps.
Their advice could actually matter.
"Raiders won't use that front door after seeing those bodies. Trap the service tunnel."
Camp Intelligence
Before setting everything up, the player could study the camp.
The system might identify:

Then you decide where to place your defenses.
But those predictions shouldn't always be correct.
Trap Aging and Maintenance
Traps shouldn't remain perfect for 15 in-game years.
Different traps deteriorate differently.

Rain damages electronics.
An animal accidentally triggers something.
Radiation damages sensors.
Someone steals the explosive.
A sandstorm exposes buried mines.
You might return and see:

The environment should matter.

People Could Discover Your Reputation
NPCs might start talking about abandoned camps associated with you.
"Don't move anything if you find a place cleared by that Wanderer."
Another NPC:
"Saw six raiders walk into an empty depot yesterday. Heard three explosions. Didn't see anybody walk back out."
Eventually you could earn hidden reputations such as:

But Settlers Can Walk Into Your Traps
There should be consequences.
You clear a raider camp.
You booby-trap everything.
Two weeks later refugees occupy it.
If you didn't configure your traps properly, innocent people can trigger them.
This makes tagging and detection systems important.

Settlers May Discover the Traps First
A settler group might disable them and leave you a note:

Or they may realize the traps are useful and incorporate them into their defenses.
Later you return to find that your abandoned enemy camp has become a small fortified settlement built around your original defenses.
That's organic Fallout worldbuilding.
Enemies Could Also Booby-Trap Camps They Abandon
The system must work both ways.
Raiders retreating from an overwhelming attack might intentionally leave behind:
Trapped corpses
Trapped ammunition boxes
Fake legendary weapons
Rigged doors
Grenades beneath beds
Explosive terminals
Mines beneath loot
Delayed explosives
So even after the battle music ends, you're not necessarily safe.
That would dramatically improve clearing locations.
The Best Part: You Might Forget
Suppose you booby-trap a warehouse at Level 8.
Fifty hours later, at Level 37, a quest sends you back there.
You barely remember the place.
You open a door.
CLICK.
Your companion says:
"Please tell me that wasn't yours."
That is exactly the type of emergent comedy Fallout should produce.
Connect It to the Larger Fallout 5 World
This system would work especially well alongside dynamic repopulation, roaming NPCs, temporary shelters, nighttime migration, faction expansion, missing-person systems, bounty hunters, weather displacement, and mobile settlements.
An "abandoned" location would therefore never truly mean:
finished.
It would mean:
currently unoccupied.
That distinction could fundamentally change how Fallout 5's open world feels.
The player wouldn't merely clear locations.
They would leave history, danger, evidence, rumors, traps, opportunities, and consequences behind them wherever they traveled.
Exactly. Regular settlers should not magically know that a cleared camp is booby-trapped. Unless someone warns them, they personally witnessed the traps being placed, or they discover evidence, they should treat the location like any other abandoned site.
Settler Trap-Awareness System
When settlers find a seemingly empty location, their knowledge should begin at something like:

Possible clues could include:
A visible tripwire near a doorway
A partially buried mine
Recently disturbed dirt
Unusual wiring
A suspiciously placed container

Blood leading toward a trapped room
Several dead enemies clustered around one doorway
Burn marks from an earlier triggered trap
A damaged pressure plate
Warning symbols left by someone else
An abandoned detonator
A dead settler, scavenger, or animal that already triggered something
A companion saying something looks wrong
Information from travelers who know you trapped the location
Settlers Should Have Different Awareness Levels
A farmer who has spent most of his life behind settlement walls shouldn't suddenly become a bomb-disposal expert.
Inexperienced Settler
May notice only extremely obvious traps.
Wasteland Survivor
Recognizes mines, tripwires, and suspicious entrances.
Hunter
Good at spotting snares, pits, tracks, and environmental disturbances.
Former Raider
Recognizes common raider traps and ambush setups.
Mechanic
Notices electrical wiring and improvised mechanical devices.
Demolitions Expert
Can identify, disarm, recover, and potentially reuse sophisticated traps.
Former Soldier
Approaches suspicious buildings methodically and may tell everyone to stop moving.
That means a group of settlers entering an abandoned location could behave differently depending on who happens to be traveling with them.
The First Clue Could Change Their Behavior
Imagine five settlers looking for somewhere to stay.
They enter a camp you cleared several weeks earlier.
The first settler says:
"Looks empty."
They begin searching.
Someone notices a wire running behind a cabinet.
Now their behavior changes.
Suspicion Level: LOW → HIGH
Instead of freely exploring, they might:
Stop everyone from moving.
Call the others back outside.
Carefully inspect entrances.
Look for additional traps.
Send their most experienced member ahead.
Mark suspicious objects.
Abandon the location completely.
Search for somebody capable of clearing it.
Attempt to disarm the traps themselves.
This creates a much more believable NPC intelligence system.
Sometimes They Discover the Danger Too Late
A group shouldn't always successfully figure it out.
They might find absolutely no clue.
One settler opens a door.
BOOM.
Now everybody understands.
Their reaction could depend on what happened.
One trap injures someone:
"Nobody touch anything!"
A settler dies:
"This whole damn place might be rigged!"
Several traps trigger:
They may completely abandon the camp and spread the word.
That location can develop a reputation without the player ever witnessing what happened.
Clues Can Spread Through Wasteland Knowledge
Knowledge should move person to person, not instantly across the entire game world.
For example:
Day 1: Settlers discover a trapped warehouse.
Day 3: Survivors reach another settlement.
Day 5: Travelers hear the story.
Day 8: A caravan starts warning people.
Eventually NPC dialogue might include:
"Don't stay at that old freight yard. Somebody wired the place."
But another group twenty miles away might know absolutely nothing about it.
That prevents the common videogame problem where every NPC somehow shares one giant database.
Settlers Could Leave Warning Clues for Others
After discovering your traps, settlers might leave:
Painted warning symbols
Makeshift signs
Chalk markings
Skulls near entrances
Red cloth tied around dangerous doors
Notes
Barricades
Flags
Audible warning devices
Someone may write:
TRAPS INSIDE
But weather, creatures, enemies, or scavengers could eventually remove those warnings.
So the location's knowledge can actually be lost again.
Someone Could Remove the Warning
This gets even better.
Raiders planning to lure people into the location could intentionally remove a settler's warning sign.
A scavenger might take the sign because it contains usable metal.
Wind could knock it down.
A creature could drag away the corpse that served as the biggest clue.
Now the next travelers arrive without knowing what happened.
Settlers Could Investigate Previous Victims
Environmental evidence becomes gameplay.
A settler examines a corpse and says:
"These aren't bullet wounds."
Another notices fragments embedded in the wall.
"Explosion came from over there."
A knowledgeable NPC might reconstruct what happened:
Explosive originated near doorway.
Victim was moving inward.
Possible pressure-triggered device.
Suddenly the settlers aren't psychic. They're reasoning from evidence.
Player Responsibility Becomes Much More Interesting
The player might deliberately leave warnings behind.
When setting a trap, you could optionally create:

Settlers
Companions
Everyone
No warning
But primitive warning markers aren't guaranteed to work.
A settler needs to:
Notice it.
Understand it.
Believe it.
Act appropriately.
Someone might see:
DANGER: MINES
And another settler says:
"Raiders probably wrote that to scare people away from their stash."
They enter anyway.
That's Fallout.
Reputation Doesn't Equal Knowledge
Even if your character becomes famous for booby-trapping abandoned locations, settlers shouldn't automatically identify this particular camp as yours.
They might only become suspicious.
"You heard about that Wanderer who rigs the places they clear?"
"Yeah."
"You think this is one of them?"
"Only one way to find out."
That is much better than giving NPCs perfect information.
The governing rule should be:
NPCs know only what they have personally seen, reasonably inferred, been trained to recognize, or been told by someone else.
That rule could extend well beyond traps into missing persons, wanted fugitives, faction movements, dangerous creatures, abandoned settlements, hidden bases, battles, and even rumors about the player.
It would make information itself part of Fallout 5's simulated world.
This adds another layer: some trap setters should deliberately build a warning and observation perimeter around a booby-trapped area, especially if they do not want innocent settlers, merchants, children, wandering scavengers, or allies walking into it.
[Fallout 5] Advanced Booby-Trapped Location, Warning Robot, and Perimeter System
The system should recognize that there are very different kinds of trap setters.
Some are careless.
Some are cruel.
Some want absolutely everyone who enters to die.
Others are highly disciplined and only want the traps to affect enemies.
That distinction could become part of the character's identity.
Different Trap-Setter Philosophies
A character could effectively develop an operational style:
Indiscriminate Trapper
Leaves no warnings.
Traps almost everything.
Doesn't care who enters.
May earn a frightening reputation.
Can cause civilian casualties.
Defensive Trapper
Traps hostile approach routes.
Leaves safe corridors.
Marks dangerous areas.
Tries to protect innocent travelers.
Military Trapper
Uses observation posts.
Layers traps into defensive zones.
Deploys sensors and robots.
Records approaching forces.
Uses controlled detonations.
Hunter/Survivalist
Uses subtle natural traps.
Avoids wasting explosives.
Creates escape routes.
Watches animal movement and tracks.
Saboteur
Wants enemies to occupy the location first.
Keeps traps difficult to detect.
May intentionally make the camp appear safe.
This means two characters with the same Explosives skill could use traps completely differently.
Perimeter Warning Robots
One of the best additions would be small autonomous robots stationed outside the actual danger zone.
Their job isn't necessarily combat.
Their job is to determine:
Who's approaching?
Imagine a tiny robot hidden on a ridge overlooking a trapped raider camp.
A group of settlers approaches.
The robot rolls out.
"ATTENTION. HAZARDOUS AREA AHEAD. EXPLOSIVE DEVICES DETECTED. ALTERNATE ROUTE ADVISED."
The settlers stop.
Now they know.
But if raiders approach, the robot may behave completely differently.
It could quietly retreat into the wasteland without saying anything.
The raiders think the camp is abandoned.
They continue inside.
BOOM.
That creates an actual friend-or-foe warning network.
Robots That Leave When Enemies Approach
This part could be especially useful.
Some trap setters wouldn't want their warning robot captured, destroyed, or used as evidence.
The robot detects hostiles at a distance.
Instead of engaging:
HOSTILE CONTACT DETECTED
It quietly:
Powers down its visible lights.
Cancels warning broadcasts.
Hides.
Retreats.
Returns to the player's settlement.
Moves to a secondary observation point.
Buries itself.
Climbs into a concealed compartment.
Transmits one final signal.
The enemy sees nothing unusual.
That's important because a robot screaming:
"WARNING! THIS PLACE IS FULL OF MINES!"
would obviously ruin the ambush.
So the player could configure:

Escorting Settlers Away
A more sophisticated robot could physically guide innocent travelers away.
"DANGER. PLEASE FOLLOW."

A family searching for shelter might initially be disappointed, but the robot could direct them toward:
A nearby settlement
A safe shelter
A trading post
A road
A medical station
Another abandoned structure
That makes the robot more than an alarm.
It becomes a wasteland safety beacon.
Some Settlers Won't Trust the Robot
This is important.
A robot warning someone doesn't automatically mean they believe it.
A settler could say:
"How do we know it's not trying to scare us away from good salvage?"
Another:
"That thing said mines. I'm not finding out the hard way."
Different NPC personalities determine what happens next.
Cautious settlers
Leave immediately.
Desperate settlers
Enter anyway because they need shelter.
Scavengers
May believe valuable loot is being protected.
Experienced wastelanders
Take the warning seriously.
Children
Might approach the robot out of curiosity until an adult stops them.
Raiders
May shoot it immediately.

May attempt to hack it.
Brotherhood personnel
May confiscate or inspect it.

Might be more interested in stealing the robot than entering the camp.
That makes the warning system itself part of the encounter.
Cheap Warning Robots vs Advanced Robots
Not every player should immediately have military-grade recognition technology.
Tier 1: Simple Warning Bot
Cheap.
Detects movement.
Broadcasts:
"Danger. Keep away."
It cannot determine who is friendly.
That means enemies hear the warning too.
Tier 2: Identification Bot

The raiders walk straight toward the camp.
Disposable Warning Robots
Not every robot has to be sophisticated.
People in the wasteland could build crude little robots out of:

Eyebot parts
Radios
Toys
Wheels
Scrap sensors
Cameras
Pip-Boy components
Military electronics
Some might look ridiculous.
One could literally be an old vacuum cleaner with a radio mounted on top.
It rolls toward settlers:
"BAD PLACE. BAD PLACE. DO NOT GO."
Then rolls away.
Very Fallout.
Robot Decoys
Here's where it becomes tactical.
You could station a robot near the camp specifically so enemies notice it.
The enemy sees the robot retreat.
They think:
Someone abandoned this place recently.
They follow it.
But the robot deliberately takes them through a particular entrance.
That entrance is trapped.
So now the robot isn't just warning people.
It's manipulating enemy movement.
Robot Shepherd System
A robot could have another assignment:
Civilian Intercept Zone
It doesn't stay directly beside the camp.
Instead, it patrols a radius around it.
Perhaps 100, 200, or 500 meters depending on equipment.
When friendly travelers appear:
"Restricted route ahead."
The robot intercepts them before they ever see the trapped location.
That makes much more sense for a responsible trap setter.
Multiple Robots Can Form a Perimeter
A highly prepared character might establish:
North Watch Robot

Road Warning Robot
Hilltop Observer
Emergency Messenger
They communicate with each other.
One detects movement.
The others reposition.
Now the camp has an actual intelligence perimeter.

The Robots Should Not Automatically Know Everyone
Just like settlers shouldn't possess magical information, neither should robots.
Recognition depends on what they're equipped with.
A basic robot may only understand:

An improved one:
Human / armed
A better one:
Faction insignia recognized
An advanced one:
Known individual: Settlement Resident
This creates identification mistakes.
A settler wearing scavenged Raider armor might initially be classified as hostile.
A Raider wearing settler clothing could fool basic detection.
That makes upgrades meaningful.
Challenge and Response
Advanced settlements could use primitive authentication.
The robot says:
"Identify yourself."
An allied settler provides a password.
Or possesses:
A radio identification signal
Faction token
Electronic tag
Settlement ID card
Pip-Boy authentication
Coded phrase
Without identification:

The robot warns them but doesn't necessarily reveal where the traps are.
Enemies Can Learn About the Warning Robots
Eventually enemies may discover what you're doing.
A Raider survivor could tell others:
"If you see one of those little bots disappearing into the brush, stop moving. That means the place is rigged."
Now your tactic becomes less effective.
Enemies could start:
Shooting warning robots.
Following them.
Capturing them.
Hacking them.
Planting trackers on them.
Pretending to be civilians.
Using stolen settlement identification.
Sending one person forward.
Sending animals ahead.
The player now has to adapt again.
Counterfeit Friendly Identification
This could produce excellent late-game encounters.
A group of Raiders kills settlers and steals their identification equipment.
Your robot scans them:
AUTHORIZED
It warns them about the trapped route.
Instead of walking into the ambush, they safely bypass it.
Later you discover that somebody has compromised your security network.
Now you need to:

That's a surprisingly deep system from something as simple as trapping an abandoned camp.
Robots Can Warn You About Settlers
The robot doesn't necessarily have to approach them.
It could transmit:
CIVILIAN CONTACT
Red Hill Camp
5 unidentified humans approaching danger zone.
Warning issued.
Group stopped.
Later:
Group departed east.
Or:
WARNING IGNORED
Now you have a decision.
Do you travel there?
Do you remotely disable certain traps?
Do you send another robot?
Do you contact a nearby settlement?
Emergency Trap Disarm
If the player built a sophisticated trap network, warning robots could have limited authority.
For example:
Civilian enters emergency zone.
The system automatically:
Disables mines.
Locks explosive triggers.
Powers down turrets.
Opens the safe route.
Activates warning lights.
After the civilian leaves:
Defense Network Rearmed.
But crude traps don't have that ability.
A buried fragmentation mine is just a buried fragmentation mine.
This gives advanced engineering real value.
Settlers Could Follow the Robot and Discover More Than Intended
There's also an unintended consequence.
Your warning robot tells settlers to leave.
One suspicious scavenger thinks:
"Whatever it's protecting must be valuable."
They follow the robot when it retreats.
Now they could discover:
Your hidden observation bunker
Supply cache
Radio relay
Secret settlement
Robot charging station
Tunnel
Hidden camp
So even responsible systems create risk.
Robots Can Leave Physical Warnings
If power is getting low, a robot could physically mark the area before shutting down.
It might:
Paint a warning symbol.
Drop a warning beacon.
Place flags.
Deploy a sign.
Leave holotape messages.
Spray arrows toward a safe route.
Weeks later, the robot may be gone but the warning remains.
Unless something removes it.
Settlers Can Learn From the Robots
This could feed directly into NPC experience.
An inexperienced settler repeatedly encounters trap-warning systems while traveling.
Over time:
Trap Awareness +1
Later that same settler might notice a suspicious wire without needing a robot.
That means NPCs actually learn from living in the wasteland.
Different Factions Could Have Their Own Warning Systems
This shouldn't be exclusive to the player.
Minutemen-like groups
Warn civilians and mark dangerous territory.
Raiders
May deliberately post false warning robots:
"SAFE SHELTER THIS WAY."
It leads directly into an ambush.
Brotherhood
Uses military exclusion-zone robots.
"AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY."
Scientists
Deploy radiation-detection robots.
Settlements
Use cheap homemade safety bots.
Mercenaries
Use silent surveillance machines instead of warnings.
Super Mutants
Could have crudely reprogrammed robots that yell hilariously unhelpful things.
"HUMAN GO AWAY! BOOM PLACE!"
Robots Could Develop Reputation Too
Wasteland travelers might recognize certain machines.
"Little yellow eyebot with three antennas? Yeah. If you see that thing, turn around."
The player may never realize that their warning robot has effectively become a local landmark.
Another settlement could even name it.
Trap Maps and Safe Routes
Responsible trap setters could create a hidden Trap Map.
The map records:
Armed traps
Trigger radius
Safe paths
Warning robot locations
Observation areas
Failed traps
Disarmed traps
Recently triggered traps
Companions with access to the network would know where it's safe to walk.
Ordinary settlers would not.
Again, knowledge remains localized and earned.
The World Should Remember Who Set the Traps
The most interesting extension is that the game should track ownership and responsibility.
If settlers discover that you saved them with warning robots:
Local Reputation: Responsible Wastelander +
If your unmarked traps kill them:
Local Reputation: Reckless / Dangerous +
If nobody discovers who did it:
Your reputation doesn't change.
People shouldn't automatically know you were responsible.
Someone would need:
Witnesses
Surveillance
Your known construction style
A captured robot
Distinctive components
An admission
Evidence
Rumors
That preserves the same principle:
NPC knowledge should come from observation, evidence, communication, experience, or investigation, never simply because the game knows something.
This Could Become an Entire Wasteland Information Network
The trap system starts with:
"I cleared this enemy camp and left mines behind."
But it can evolve into:
Clear Camp → Trap Location → Establish Warning Perimeter → Deploy Robots → Identify Travelers → Protect Civilians → Observe Enemies → Allow Hostiles Through → Trigger Ambush → Record Survivors → Enemies Learn → Countermeasures Develop → Rumors Spread → Location Gets Reoccupied → New People Discover Evidence
That is the kind of interconnected simulation that could make a Fallout 5 location feel like it has a life after the player walks away.
And crucially, the robot warning system doesn't eliminate uncertainty. It manages it. Some settlers listen. Some don't. Some enemies fool it. Some robots malfunction. Some get stolen. Some retreat successfully. Others disappear, leaving the player wondering what happened.
That's where the Fallout-style emergent stories come from.
