What Is the Noisemaker?

The Noisemaker is a tiny, hyperactive tracking robot originally designed as a portable security alarm. It was supposed to warn settlers, soldiers, and scavengers whenever an unknown person, creature, or machine entered its detection radius.

After decades of damaged programming, improvised repairs, and wasteland modifications, the Noisemaker no longer understands the difference between an intruder, an animal, a friendly traveler, or a piece of moving machinery.

Once it detects something, it follows.

Once it follows, it makes noise.

Once it gets close, it becomes almost impossible to ignore.

The Noisemaker is not especially deadly by itself, but it can expose hiding places, ruin stealth attacks, attract dangerous creatures, separate groups, and turn an otherwise quiet situation into complete chaos.


Physical Appearance

The standard Noisemaker is only about 12 to 18 inches tall. Its body resembles a dented prewar emergency siren mounted on three short mechanical legs.

Its design includes:

  • A round central body made from mismatched metal plates.

  • Three or four fast-moving spiderlike legs.

  • A rotating red warning light on top.

  • A damaged speaker mounted where a face should be.

Level One: Suspicion

The robot emits soft chirps and begins following from a distance.

Level Two: Confirmed Movement

The chirping becomes a repetitive electronic beeping. Its red warning light begins flashing.

Level Three: Active Pursuit

It announces the target’s approximate direction and begins running after them.

Level Four: Close Proximity

The siren becomes extremely loud. Nearby enemies may hear it and investigate.

Level Five: Contact Range

The Noisemaker circles the target’s legs, releases dust, rattles its body, and produces a deafening alarm.

“YOU HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY LOCATED!”

The closer it gets, the louder and lower-pitched the alarm becomes. At maximum proximity, the sound transforms from a high electronic beep into a deep, vibrating emergency horn that can be felt through the ground.


Tracking Behavior

Once a Noisemaker chooses a target, it becomes extremely persistent.

It can:

  • Follow footprints.

  • Detect displaced dust.

  • Track heat trails.

  • Follow blood.

  • Climb over small obstacles.

  • Crawl beneath damaged doors.

  • Jump across narrow gaps.

How the Cluster Operates

Cluster Formations

The Noise Ring

The robots surround a group and circle them while sounding alarms from every direction.

This makes it difficult to determine where enemies are approaching from.

The Dust Funnel

Several Dusters create clouds along the sides of an area while Blockers force the group toward a specific path.

This can drive travelers into:

  • Raider ambushes.

  • Minefields.

  • Creature nests.

  • Automated defenses.

  • Collapsing structures.

  • Noisemaker collection zones.

The False Exit

The cluster intentionally leaves one path clear. The path appears to be an escape route, but another group of Noisemakers waits at the end.

The Walking Alarm

Clingers attach themselves to multiple members of a group. Even after the survivors escape, they continue broadcasting their positions.

The Avalanche

Dozens of Noisemakers roll, jump, and tumble downhill toward a large group while releasing dust and sounding alarms.

The robots may not cause much physical damage, but the confusion can be devastating.


Combat Abilities

The Noisemaker is primarily a support and disruption robot, but it has several defensive abilities.

Leg-Ramming

It charges into ankles, knees, and mechanical joints.

This can:

  • Stagger human targets.

However, destroying one carelessly may activate its final alarm and summon the rest of the cluster.

Some units also contain pressurized dust tanks that burst when shot, covering the area in blinding powder.


Hacking Options

A player with sufficient technical skill can reprogram a Noisemaker.

Friendly Detection Mode

The robot warns the player when enemies approach.

Target Assignment Mode

The player selects an NPC, creature, or robot for the Noisemaker to follow.

Silent Tracker Mode

The alarm is disabled, allowing it to secretly follow a target and report their location.

The player may discover a unique advanced Noisemaker called Racket.

Racket has developed a personality after years of following travelers across the wasteland. Unlike ordinary units, Racket understands that people dislike its alarm. It simply does not understand why.

Racket sincerely believes noise is comforting.

Racket can become a permanent robotic companion.

Early Warning

Highlights nearby hidden enemies and traps.

Dust Screen

Creates a cloud that helps the player escape combat.

Target Harassment

Follows a selected enemy and disrupts their attacks.

Creature Agitation

Its alarm can provoke nearby creatures into attacking hostile factions.

Portable Decoy

Racket can imitate:

  • Gunfire.

  • Human screams.

  • Deathclaw roars.

Quest Concept: “Keep It Down”

The player enters a settlement where no one is permitted to speak above a whisper.

The settlement is surrounded by hundreds of dormant Noisemakers. Any loud sound activates them.

The settlers communicate through:

  • Hand signals.

  • Written notes.

  • Flashing lights.

  • Painted symbols.

  • Carefully trained animals.

A local mechanic wants the player to destroy the Noisemaker control station. Another resident wants to repair the system and use it as a settlement defense network.

A third person secretly wants to wake every robot and drive the population away.

Possible outcomes include:

  • Destroying the entire network.

  • Reprogramming the Noisemakers to protect the settlement.

  • Giving control to the mechanic.

  • Taking control for the player’s settlements.

  • Accidentally activating a massive cluster.

  • Discovering that the robots are keeping something worse trapped underground.


Settlement Use

Captured Noisemakers could be assigned to player settlements.

They could serve as:

  • Perimeter alarms.

  • Patrol robots.

  • Intruder trackers.

  • Crop protectors.

  • Creature deterrents.

  • Fire alarms.

  • Missing-person trackers.

  • Caravan escorts.

  • Dust collectors.

  • Emergency signal beacons.

Players could establish detection rules through a terminal:

  • Ignore settlers.

  • Follow strangers.

  • Mark raiders.

  • Alert for Super Mutants.

  • Track invisible targets.

  • Detect underground creatures.

  • Remain silent unless attacked.

  • Release dust only outside the settlement.

  • Never activate near sleeping areas.

The Noisemaker was never intended to be a true combat robot. Its original purpose was detection, pursuit, and alarm. However, wasteland engineers, raider technicians, military remnants, and robotics experts quickly realize that its most important systems can be repurposed.

Its compact body already contains:

  • Pressurized dust chambers.

  • Powerful speakers.

  • Fast pursuit legs.

  • Wireless communication hardware.

With the right modifications, the Noisemaker can be transformed from an irritating alarm into a small, mobile weapons platform.

The Deadly Noisemaker

A weaponized Noisemaker still follows a target and changes its alarm as it approaches. However, the lowering pitch now serves as a warning that its attack system is charging.

At long range, it emits quick metallic chirps.

At medium range, the sound becomes a low mechanical growl.

At close range, the noise becomes a deep vibration as the robot prepares to attack.

The player gradually realizes that the lower the sound becomes, the closer the Noisemaker is to activating its weapon.

Reprogrammed Targeting Modes

A deadly Noisemaker can be programmed with more specific instructions.

Hunter Mode

The robot pursues one selected target until:

  • The robot is destroyed.

Players should not immediately gain access to every modification after finding one robot.

The first time the player fights the cluster, it uses noise and dust.

The second time, it returns with armor.

The third time, it carries electrical weapons.

The fourth time, it remains silent because it has learned that the player associates sound with danger.

By the final encounter, the absence of noise becomes the warning.

The player enters an abandoned location and hears nothing.

Then a message appears over a nearby speaker:

“ALARM SYSTEM IMPROVED.”

“WARNING NO LONGER REQUIRED.”
