Over centuries, BLAST-9 has been destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly. Each repair introduced new components, memories, and personality fragments. It now remembers every person it failed to save.
Its companion ability allows it to detect explosives, shield the player, and intercept suicide attackers. However, BLAST-9 may disobey orders and sacrifice itself whenever civilians are in danger.
Its personal quest revolves around rewriting its directive:

Blast-resistant equipment should provide a chance to survive, not immunity. A skilled player with the correct suit, preparation, positioning, and support can survive devastating encounters. A careless player can still be killed while wearing the best armor in the game.

The rescued person must remain within the suit’s extended containment field. If they fall outside it during the explosion, they lose protection.
This creates rescue missions in which the player must physically reach endangered characters before a detonation.
Suicide Super Mutant Encounters
Suicide Super Mutants would initially charge the Aegis Zero wearer without understanding the suit’s capabilities. After repeated failures, intelligent Super Mutant commanders would change their tactics.
They may stop trying to kill the wearer directly and instead use explosions to:
Throw the wearer away from an objective.
Separate the wearer from weaker allies.
Launch the wearer into a containment pit.
Bury the wearer beneath a collapsed structure.
Knock the wearer outside a settlement’s defensive walls.
Move the wearer away from a bomb they are disarming.
Force the wearer into an ambush.
Launch the wearer toward another group of enemies.
A suicide Super Mutant might deliberately grab the wearer and detonate beside a cliff, attempting to remove them from the battlefield rather than kill them.
The suit guarantees survival, but the enemy can still use blast displacement strategically.
Grenadier Counter-Tactics
Enemy grenadiers may recognize that damage is impossible and begin controlling the wearer’s movement.
They could place explosives in patterns that create:
Blast corridors.
Forced movement lanes.
Aerial launches.
Repeated knockbacks.
Explosive juggling.
Containment circles.
Directional traps.
Collapsing escape routes.
Several grenadiers could detonate charges in sequence, bouncing the wearer from one blast zone to another.
The player would remain completely unharmed, but may be unable to regain control until the explosive sequence ends.
The Blast-Juggle Threat
A coordinated enemy squad may repeatedly detonate explosives around the wearer to keep them airborne or off balance.
This is called a blast juggle.
The suit protects the operator, but continued displacement may:
Prevent weapon use.
Interrupt bomb disposal.
Move the player far from allies.
Carry the player into a prepared trap.
Allow enemies to attack unprotected civilians.
Delay the player while an objective is destroyed.
The player can counter this by activating Fortress Mode, using directional thrusters, deploying anchor spikes, or destroying the enemy explosive network.
Power and Failure Rules
The suit should truly provide complete explosive safety rather than secretly allowing certain explosions to bypass its protection. Its challenge comes from acquiring and powering the technology.
While Fully Powered
No explosion type can injure or kill the wearer.
At Critical Power
The suit reserves enough energy to protect the wearer from one final explosion. Afterward, it enters shutdown mode.
Without Power
The suit becomes extremely heavy armor but loses its absolute protection field.
Emergency Core
An optional emergency core provides one guaranteed survival activation when the main power source fails.
The player always receives a clear warning before the absolute protection system becomes unavailable.
No Hidden Explosion Exceptions
The suit should not have arbitrary exceptions simply to weaken it.
It protects against:
Conventional explosives.
Fragmentation explosives.
Incendiary bombs.
Fuel-air explosives.
Nuclear explosions.
Mini-nukes.
Plasma charges.
Pulse grenades.
Cryogenic bombs.
Chemical blasts.
Electrical explosions.
Sonic explosives.
Alien explosives.
Experimental faction weapons.
Chain reactions.
Exploding vehicles.
Ammunition depot detonations.
Reactor explosions.
Artillery strikes.
Missile impacts.
Orbital bombardment.
If the event is classified as an explosion, the active suit protects the wearer completely.
Rare Endgame Status
The Aegis Zero should be extremely difficult to obtain.
Possible requirements include:
Recovering several prototype components.
Finding the original research facility.
Repairing an experimental reactor.
Recruiting a specialist scientist.
Recovering technology from different factions.
Completing a major blast-survival questline.
Deciding which faction controls the design.
Constructing a specialized suit station.
Securing an irreplaceable energy source.
Only one complete suit may initially exist, although the player could eventually learn how to manufacture additional versions for companions or settlement defenders.
Major Quest: Ground Zero
A faction discovers a massive pre-war explosive buried beneath a populated region. The device cannot be disarmed remotely. Someone wearing the Aegis Zero must enter the blast chamber and manually activate its containment system.
The mission can end in several ways:
The player completely prevents detonation.
The bomb explodes, but the player survives inside the suit.
The explosion throws the player miles away from ground zero.
The blast launches the player into an unexplored region.
The player protects a companion within the expanded field.
The suit contains the explosion but becomes buried underground.
A faction steals the suit after the player emerges.
The explosion awakens something beneath the wasteland.
The detonation could become one of Fallout 5’s largest cinematic moments. Buildings, vehicles, enemies, and debris are destroyed while the player remains completely unharmed inside the field.
When the smoke clears, the character may be standing at the center of the crater—or may have been thrown far beyond it.
Design Rule
The Aegis Zero follows one absolute gameplay rule:
Explosions can never injure or kill the wearer while the suit is active, but explosive force may still move, launch, trap, separate, or reposition them.
This preserves the fantasy of a completely explosion-proof suit without making every explosive encounter tactically meaningless.
The player no longer fears dying from the blast. Instead, they must consider where the blast might send them, what it might destroy around them, and who remains unprotected when the explosion occurs.
