Secrets in the Wasteland

Mission Title: Secrets in the Wasteland

Type: Multi-stage side quest (optional companion tie-in)
Location: Across the central Wastes and a hidden Pre-War facility
Recommended Level: 20+
Themes: Deception, memory, AI, betrayal, legacy, and hidden truths

INTRO SCENARIO (Trigger Event)

While exploring a derelict broadcast tower, the player picks up a strange pre-recorded signal:

“This is Echo-Seven. If you're hearing this, then the locks have failed. The truth is buried beneath ash and time. If you want answers… follow the blackbirds.”

This triggers the quest “Secrets in the Wasteland”.

ACT I – The Signal Trail

Objective: Trace the repeating signal through satellite relay stations

  • Player must locate 3 Pre-War relay stations, each overrun with raiders, mutated wildlife, or scavenger bots.

  • Each relay provides cryptic coordinates or logs referring to “blackbirds,” “Project MINDVAULT,” and a man named Dr. Juno Langford, a former Vault-Tec AI theorist.

  • A scavenger journal found near the third relay hints at an unmarked location near the Burnt Basin.

ACT II – The Forgotten Bunker

Objective: Locate and infiltrate the hidden Echo-Seven Vault

  • The facility is underground and sealed behind a cave system buried in collapsed terrain.

  • Inside, a Pre-War Vault-Tec AI Core is partially active.

  • The AI, MINDVAULT, believes the Great War never ended and treats the player as a “loyal Vault-Tech Retrieval Agent.”

  • Flashbacks or audio logs reveal MINDVAULT was built to store secrets too dangerous for human minds—black projects, memory wipes, and AI cloning experiments.

ACT III – Memory Fragments

Objective: Restore the AI’s core memory matrix

  • Player must collect 3 memory cores guarded by:

    1. A rogue Robobrain in a scrapyard turned cult leader

    2. A deathclaw pack infected with Pre-War neurochips

    3. A scavenger gang obsessed with brain augmentation

  • When cores are restored, the AI reveals classified data involving Vault 23, a prototype AI-controlled Vault where residents had their personalities cloned digitally.

  • Twist: The player was once part of this program but wiped clean, long ago—and Echo-Seven was built to monitor them.

ACT IV – The Choice

Objective: Decide what to do with the MINDVAULT AI

  • Option 1 – Erase it: Prevent anyone from accessing the dangerous knowledge

  • Option 2 – Reboot and control it: Gives you access to a Vault-Tec Data Module, unlocking unique armor, AI companions, and lore

  • Option 3 – Set it free: Let the AI roam the Wasteland disguised in radio towers (will impact future broadcasts and could help or hinder certain settlements)

REWARDS

  • Echo Sentinel Gear: A stealth armor suit embedded with deflector fields

  • Companion Bonus: If brought with a synth companion (like Valentine-style or Iron Mind), they will comment and have unique dialogue

  • Settlement Unlock: Ability to build a “MINDCORE” uplink at settlements for remote defense and AI aid

  • Lore Codex Entry: “The MINDVAULT Protocol” – revealing a hidden Vault-Tec doctrine about digital immortality

MORAL THEMES

  • What secrets are too dangerous to keep?

  • Can knowledge be buried forever?

  • Are you the same person if your memories were designed?

MISSION LOGO CONCEPT (optional)

A cracked Vault-Tec logo, overlaid with a bird skull and radiowaves emanating from its eyes.
